Gerald and Clara Johnson Somers celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on Oct. They were married at the Wilkes County Courthouse Oct. The couple first saw each other at Charlie Somers’ store in the southeastern end of Wilkes County earlier that year and had their first date shortly thereafter. Guests were served barbecue, grilled chicken breast, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, baked apples, rolls and hushpuppies, along with tea, water, coffee and punch. Kenneth Edwin Byrd and Ida Fay Caudle Byrd celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary with a family dinner in their honor on Aug. The couple has two children, Teressa Rene Byrd and Edwin Scott Byrd; three grandchildren, Kenneth (Kenny) Byrd, Alisha Byrd and wife, Amanda Canter, and Brandon Mc Guire and wife, Brandy; and two great-grandchildren, Breanna Canter and Dakota Adams. Byrd retired from Lowe’s Hardware in 1969 after 15 years of employment, and now works for 3WC radio as a sports broadcaster. 19, 2017, at noon, in the fellowship hall of Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
They are the parents of six children, Danny (Shelley) Somers, Barry (Janice) Somers, Tammy (Gary) Wilcox, Sheila (Joey) Lester, Angela (Marty) Nixon and Regina (Tim) Henderson. Freeman and Clara Jean Wagoner of Mc Grady recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Carlton have four children, Sherry Carlton Horton (Steven) of Moravian Falls, Shawn Carlton, Sheldon Carlton, both of Boomer, and Shelia Carlton of Greensboro. Assisting in the reception were Gary Blaylock of Kernersville and Dean Carlton of North Wilkesboro. The event was given by their children, Missy Severt, and husband, Roy, and Jason Wiles and wife, Dena, all of Hays, and their three grandchildren.
They were married July 9, 1966, at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, at 2 p.m., by the Rev. A reception was held in the church fellowship hall the evening before the wedding, given by Mrs. The event was given by the couple’s three children and spouses, Stephanie Barnes, Donna Barnes-Harper (Russell) and “Rusty” Barnes (Patricia). Barnes also have three grandchildren, Kama, Alex and Zachery.
They were married June 15, 1956 in North Wilkesboro.
Arthur Gerald Lankford and Linda Gay Hall Lankford will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary July 9, 2016. They were married in Elkin by their pastor, the Rev. Carter retired from Lowe’s Companies Inc., with 32 years of employment as a secretary. The celebration took place in Clemmons, at a sunset garden party.
A three-tiered cake with chocolate, strawberry and vanilla layers was served for dessert. They also have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Paul Michael and Shirley Day Wells celebrated 50 years together on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at noon, at the Meeting Place in Elkin. Wells were married July 30, 1966, in Caldwell County, by the Rev. They are members of Journey of Grace Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro. Jordan were among the guests attending the anniversary celebration. Sebastian is the daughter of the late William Basil and Ennice Alexander Edwards. Sebastian is the son of the late Percy Everette and Hattie Cook Sebastian. Thomas, from Kansas, were on active duty in the United States Army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, when they met and began dating in the summer of 1965. They were married in Basel, Switzerland on June 7, 1965 (civil ceremony) and on June 25, 1966 (religious ceremony) in the hospital chapel. Shepherd was presented a corsage of white roses while the Rev. James Hayes Walker and Pauline (Polly) Pipes Walker of Charlotte celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 29, 2016.

The couple has three daughters, Vicky Cooper, and husband, Thomas, Marsha Stanley and husband, Mike, and Kelly Church and husband, the Rev. They also have five grandchildren, Josh Cooper, and wife, Ashleigh, Danielle Wingler, and husband, Cody, Chandler Cooper, Presley Church and Micah Church. Clyde and Hazel Mc Grady of Traphill celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a dinner in their honor on Aug. The Mc Gradys have three children, Kenny Mc Grady, and wife, Denise, Dennis Mc Grady, and wife, Janice, and a daughter, Tammy Mc Grady, all of Traphill. Members of their family and some of their lifelong friends attended. Jimmy and Helen Hall Bumgarner of Millers Creek celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary July 19, 2016. For 50 years, the Bumgarners lived in Richmond, Va. Bumgarner was employed by Mc Lean Trucking for 25 years and the Virginia Department of Corrections for 20 years. Bumgarner was employed by the Chesterfield County School System. David and Mary Jo Thomas recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Brady and Linda Miller of Millers Creek celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 2, 2016. “Bud,” 88, and Margie Marie Key Shepherd, 87, of Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, were married on June 6, 1946, by the Rev. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Monday, June 6, 2016. Celebrating with the couple were their children, Debi and Gene Friedlander of Miami, Fla., and Julie and Chris Mingus of Charlotte, and their grandchildren, Cameron Mitchell and James Mc Caig Mitchell of Charlotte, and Victoria Friedlander of Miami.
Freeman Wagoner is the son of the late Earnest and Fannie Wagoner. They also have six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Johnson retired from American Drew Furniture after 42 years of service. Fred and Edna Mae Royal Stamper of China Grove celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary Jan. He was a longtime employee of Lowe’s Hardware and retired as a delivery manager with over 25 years of service in the mid-1990s. Clonch held various jobs in banking, was a supervisor at Lowe’s offices, and owned her own doughnut shop for a short time with her sister, Margie Wray.
The couple has resided on Thomas Street in North Wilkesboro since the day they were married in 1957.
